Dr Seuss Dessert Reading Extravaganza

On Tuesday 2 December the National Stadium on Venetian Road came alive for United Way’s Dr Seuss Reading Desserts. It was one of those evenings that reminds you how much community matters. Sixteen companies set up colourful, imaginative booths, each one brighter and more creative than the last. Even a sudden storm early on couldn’t dampen the spirit of the event. Once the skies cleared more than 200 excited kids poured in, ready to read, explore and enjoy everything the evening had to offer.

Children moved from booth to booth reading stories aloud while volunteers listened, encouraged and handed out books for them to take home. Many people dressed in Dr Seuss costumes or festive flair which added to the fun. Treat bags, desserts and sweet goodies were everywhere, giving the event its unmistakable “Reading Desserts” charm.

Each booth had its own flair, from playful themes to unique reading techniques that brought the stories to life. United Way provided tents, stacks of books and the iconic Cat in the Hat hat for booth leaders. Participating organisations added their own magic with banners, props and plenty of personality.

As the night went on there were brief remarks from community and government officials, prize giveaways and lots of laughter as families enjoyed a meaningful evening together. It was a true celebration of literacy and community spirit made possible by dedicated volunteers, creative companies and children eager to read.

A wonderful night all around and a reminder of how powerful it is when our community comes together.
