United Way TCI Wraps Up Summer Camp with Smiles, Success and Literacy Wins

This July, United Way Turks and Caicos Islands hosted our 2025 Summer Enrichment Camp, and what a two weeks it was! From July 7–18, more than 120 children came together for a mix of learning, creativity, and fun.

Our camp wasn’t just about filling summer days — it was about helping kids grow in confidence, strengthen their reading skills, and discover new passions. As CEO Claudine Ewing shared, “We witnessed incredible transformations, especially among our young readers who began the camp unsure of themselves and ended it empowered.”

Building Confidence Through Literacy

One of the highlights of camp was our literacy intervention sessions for 18 students ages 6–9. With small group lessons, games, and hands-on activities, these children made measurable progress in reading and grew in self-confidence. This effort builds on our year-round Yes I Can Read programme, which has already supported more than 250 children across the Islands.

Learning Through Play

Every day of camp brought something new:

  • World of Science Day (slime-making was a big hit!)
  • Reading Author Day with local writers and a magical breakfast with Sesame Street friends
  • Mindfulness & Emotional Awareness Day to practice calm and focus
  • World of Arts Day for painting, jewelry-making, and tie-dye
  • Sports Day, talent shows, and even ice cream-making
  • Our campers laughed, learned, and built memories that will last a lifetime.
Celebrating Achievements

A particularly moving moment came when 11 Grade 6 students who had once struggled with reading were recognised for passing their Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment. Each received a certificate and an iPad — proof of what’s possible with hard work, support, and encouragement.

Powered by Community Support

This camp simply wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of our donors and sponsors. From funding activities to volunteering alongside students, their contributions turned ideas into reality and learning into joy. We extend our heartfelt thanks to every individual and organisation who played a part.

Looking Ahead

The end of camp is just the beginning. With our literacy programmes continuing to grow, United Way TCI is committed to reaching more schools, supporting more families, and opening even more doors for our children.

As Chairman Mark A. Fulford put it, “This camp wasn’t just an event — it was a movement of compassion, collaboration, and commitment to our youth.”

Together, we’re proving that when a community comes together, anything is possible.
